Tamil Nadu delays secretariat project consultation amid resident opposition

The Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has rescheduled a crucial public consultation on the proposed new State Secretariat at Pattinapakkam following strong resistance from local residents. The meeting, initially planned for November 3, has been pushed to November 5.

The delay comes as residents of the Foreshore Estate have mounted vocal opposition to the project, with threats to boycott the consultation process. The resistance reflects concerns over the scale of displacement involved in the ambitious infrastructure initiative.

To advance the project, TNHB has already initiated tender proceedings for the demolition of 96 houses located within the Foreshore Estate. The move marks a significant step toward implementing the secretariat relocation plan, though the timeline remains uncertain given the community backlash.

The consultation is intended to address grievances and explain the project's scope and rehabilitation provisions to affected residents. Officials are expected to use the rescheduled date to engage with the community and attempt to defuse tensions surrounding the large-scale residential displacement.
