The Tamil Nadu administration has moved to streamline its governance structure by dissolving the High-Level Committee on Union-State Relations, consolidating its mandate with an existing constitutional body. According to the Government Order issued on November 6, 2026, all functions previously assigned to the committee have been transferred to the State Law Commission, which will now absorb these responsibilities as part of its expanded purview.
The decision reflects the government's effort to optimize administrative efficiency by merging overlapping functions into a single institutional framework. The State Law Commission, already tasked with examining existing laws and proposing reforms, will now handle matters related to centre-state relations and coordination.
The committee, which had been tasked with examining issues pertaining to the relationship between the Union government and the state, will cease operations following the formal disbandment order. The shift concentrates authority over union-state matters within a body equipped with legal expertise and constitutional standing.
This administrative restructuring signals the government's intent to reduce bureaucratic redundancy while ensuring continuity in handling centre-state affairs. The State Law Commission, as an autonomous body, will assume full responsibility for matters that previously fell under the dissolved committee's jurisdiction.
