Tamil Nadu Election Commission cancels bypoll after CM's welfare scheme announcements

The Election Commission of India has cancelled a bypoll in Tamil Nadu's Ranipet constituency after the state's Chief Minister announced welfare schemes during the model code of conduct period.

The decision came despite contentions from AIADMK candidate Kovi S. Moghanan, who argued that the model code of conduct was only to be enforced from April 6 onwards. The candidate claimed that since the Chief Minister made the scheme announcements at Ranipet on April 5, the code had been followed in both letter and spirit.

The poll authorities, however, ruled that the announcements constituted a violation of electoral protocols, which prohibit political parties and government officials from announcing welfare schemes or making policy decisions that could influence voters once the election process begins.

The cancellation underscores the Election Commission's strict interpretation of conduct rules during electoral periods and its commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all candidates. The ruling reflects the commission's position that welfare announcements, even if made marginally before the official commencement date, can potentially sway voter behaviour and compromise election integrity.
