Tamil Nadu faces power crisis as September demand peaks at record levels

Electricity demand in Tamil Nadu has reached peak levels this September, straining the state's generation and distribution infrastructure. The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) is confronting a shortfall exceeding 3,000 MW as consumption surges to 20,500 MW, compared with 16,000-17,000 MW recorded during September of the previous year.

To address the severe deficit, TNPDCL has rushed to procure an additional 2,000 MW of power from external sources in an attempt to mitigate supply disruptions. Despite these measures, the utility has been unable to prevent unscheduled power cuts across various districts, affecting households and industries alike.

The sharp spike in electricity consumption reflects heightened demand driven by factors including seasonal cooling requirements and industrial activity. Power officials attribute the gap between supply and demand to constraints in generation capacity and the challenges of meeting peak-hour requirements during peak summer months.

The power crisis underscores growing strain on Tamil Nadu's electricity infrastructure as the state's consumption patterns continue to surge. TNPDCL officials have stated that efforts to augment supply through renewable energy sources and efficiency measures remain ongoing, though immediate relief from the current shortages appears unlikely in the near term.
