According to the Tamil Nadu Toddy Movement's coordination body, lifting the prohibition would unlock significant employment opportunities and provide economic sustenance to numerous families dependent on the industry.
The traditional beverage, extracted from palm and coconut trees, has historically supported rural economies across South India. Proponents of the ban's removal argue that regulated legalization could balance public health concerns with the economic needs of farming communities, particularly in regions where alternative income sources remain limited.
The movement has begun organizing stakeholder discussions to present data on potential job creation and revenue generation. Organizers contend that a framework allowing controlled production and distribution could address both regulatory concerns and livelihood issues simultaneously.
State officials have not yet responded formally to the farmers' petition. The push comes amid broader discussions in Tamil Nadu about agricultural diversification and rural income support schemes.
