Tamil Nadu fisherfolk resist Secretariat relocation to coastal town

Fisherfolk from the coastal settlement of Pattinapakkam have mobilised against proposals to establish a new Secretariat at their location, raising objections about the project's implications for their traditional occupation and marine resources.

The fishing communities argue that development of such a large administrative facility would encroach on fishing grounds and disrupt centuries-old livelihoods dependent on coastal access. Local representatives have raised concerns that the construction and subsequent operations would compromise the ecological balance of the fishing grounds and restrict traditional maritime activities.

The opposition reflects growing tensions between infrastructure development projects and the interests of traditional coastal communities across Tamil Nadu. Fisherfolk organisations have called for consultation with local stakeholders before finalising any such major relocation decisions that would affect their access to fishing areas.

The proposed Secretariat relocation remains under consideration by state authorities, though the scale of local resistance suggests the project may face significant hurdles in execution. Officials have not yet responded formally to the fisherfolk's concerns regarding alternative sites or mitigation measures for the affected communities.
