Tamil Nadu govt denies curbing worker rights after Samsung protest arrests

Police in Tamil Nadu conducted a midnight operation to arrest 10 members of the Samsung workers' union as they mounted protests at the company's facility. The crackdowns continued into Wednesday morning as workers persisted with their industrial action, resulting in additional arrests.
State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu addressed concerns about the police action, asserting that the Tamil Nadu government remains committed to protecting workers' constitutional rights. He stated that the government is not attempting to suppress labour demonstrations or curtail the legitimate grievances of organised workers.
All workers detained during the overnight and early morning operations have been released, officials confirmed. The clarification from the state government comes amid scrutiny over the heavy-handed police response to the industrial action at the electronics manufacturing facility.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between labour unions and authorities in Tamil Nadu, a state with a significant manufacturing sector.
