Tamil Nadu hikes dearness allowance for govt staff to 63 percent

The Tamil Nadu government has announced an increase in dearness allowance (DA) from 60 percent to 63 percent for its employees, effective immediately. The decision will provide financial relief to over 16 lakh beneficiaries, comprising government employees, teachers, pensioners, and family pensioners across the state.

The three-percentage-point hike in DA is expected to ease the financial burden on the state's workforce amid rising cost of living. Government employees and pensioners have been advocating for such increases to maintain their purchasing power in the face of inflationary pressures.

The enhanced dearness allowance will apply uniformly across all eligible categories of state government staff. The increased DA amount will be reflected in the next salary cycle, ensuring swift implementation of the government's decision.

This move underscores the Tamil Nadu government's commitment to supporting its civil service personnel and retirees. Similar DA adjustments are periodically reviewed by state governments across India, typically aligned with inflation indices and budgetary considerations.
