Tamil Nadu housing board identifies 20 sites for tenement reconstruction

The Tamil Nadu Urban Housing Development Board (TNUHDB) has identified 20 sites across Tamil Nadu for comprehensive reconstruction and rehabilitation of deteriorating residential buildings. The move comes as part of a broader initiative to upgrade aging housing infrastructure and improve living conditions for residents in substandard tenements.

The board has issued an appeal to current occupants of the targeted dilapidated structures to voluntarily vacate their dwellings to enable smooth execution of the redevelopment work. Officials stated that the reconstruction projects are designed to replace unsafe and outdated buildings with modern residential facilities that meet contemporary standards.

The TNUHDB, which oversees public housing development across the state, has not released a detailed timeline for the reconstruction process or specified locations of all 20 identified sites. The agency is expected to provide further information regarding rehabilitation schemes and relocation assistance for affected residents in the coming weeks.

This initiative reflects Tamil Nadu's ongoing efforts to address the housing shortage and improve urban living standards across the state. Similar redevelopment programs have been undertaken in previous years to replace slum structures with organized residential complexes offering better amenities and infrastructure.
