Tamil Nadu launches ₹3.80 crore anti-drug plan targeting youth

Tamil Nadu is rolling out a dedicated anti-drug programme aimed at protecting vulnerable youth from substance abuse while simultaneously supporting those already affected by addiction. The initiative, overseen by the state's Social Welfare and Women Empowerment department, carries an allocated budget of ₹3.80 crore.
According to Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment K. Jegadeshwari, the programme addresses multiple dimensions of the drug menace afflicting the state. Beyond prevention efforts targeted at children and young adults, the scheme encompasses rehabilitation services and social integration support for victims of addiction.
The comprehensive approach reflects growing concerns over substance abuse among Tamil Nadu's youth population. By combining preventive measures with recovery and reintegration pathways, the state aims to tackle both the causes and consequences of drug dependency.
The initiative is expected to be implemented across districts as part of a broader drive to strengthen social welfare infrastructure in the state. Officials indicated that the programme would leverage existing healthcare and counselling resources while establishing new support mechanisms for affected individuals and their families.
