Tamil Nadu launches Rs 107-crore initiative to combat rabies

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a Rs 107-crore project focused on rabies control and prevention across the state. According to Minister Rajmohan, the initiative will be rolled out in phases, beginning with urban local bodies including municipal corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats.

The project represents a significant investment in public health infrastructure and disease management at the grassroots level. By targeting urban centres first, the state aims to establish a robust framework for rabies surveillance, prevention, and treatment before expanding to other areas.

Rabies remains a critical public health concern in India, particularly in states with high case loads. The disease, transmitted primarily through animal bites and scratches, carries a high fatality rate if left untreated. The Tamil Nadu initiative is expected to strengthen vaccination programmes, improve access to post-exposure prophylaxis, and enhance awareness among the general population.

The phased implementation strategy will allow authorities to assess the effectiveness of control measures and refine approaches before scaling up operations. Officials have emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between health departments and local civic bodies to ensure comprehensive coverage and effective disease management across urban settlements.
