Tamil Nadu witnessed unusually crowded scenes at Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) outlets on Tuesday and Wednesday as customers rushed to purchase alcohol ahead of anticipated price increases. Multiple locations reported extended queues and administrative challenges managing the unexpected volume of buyers, with some stores experiencing temporary delays in service.
The spike in demand was triggered by announcements of a ₹10 hike across various liquor categories and accompanying rumours of potential shop closures in certain areas. While official confirmation on the scope and timing of the price adjustment remained unclear, consumers interpreted the reports as sufficient cause to accelerate their purchases.
State authorities have yet to issue a formal statement clarifying the exact implementation date for the proposed price changes or confirming details regarding any outlet shutdowns. The uncertainty has added to public anxiety, with industry observers noting that such pricing adjustments typically follow government reviews of operational costs and revenue requirements.
Tasmac, which operates over 5,000 retail points across Tamil Nadu, handles substantial daily transaction volumes. Officials acknowledged the congestion at several outlets but did not attribute it to any systemic supply or operational constraints. Consumer groups have called for advance notice of any price modifications to allow adequate preparation.
