Tamil Nadu opposition demands judicial probe into Periyar Arivulagam book procurement

Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have intensified demands for a formal probe into procurement practices at Periyar Arivulagam, citing concerns over potential irregularities in book purchases by the institution. The allegations have prompted calls for a comprehensive investigation into the matter, with political leaders expressing doubts about the effectiveness of routine administrative scrutiny.

O. Panneerselvam, a senior opposition figure, has advocated for establishing a commission of inquiry to be chaired by a retired High Court judge. According to Panneerselvam's position, such an independent body would be necessary to conduct a thorough and credible examination of the procurement procedures followed by the organization.

The CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam has similarly contested the adequacy of standard police investigation mechanisms in this case. Shanmugam contends that a conventional police inquiry would lack the rigor and independence required to uncover the full extent of any irregularities, underscoring the need for a more specialized investigative framework.

Periyar Arivulagam, a prominent cultural and educational institution in Tamil Nadu, has become the focal point of political scrutiny as opposition parties unite in seeking greater transparency and accountability in its administrative and procurement operations. The demand for judicial oversight reflects broader concerns about institutional governance and the need for mechanisms that can command public confidence.
