Tamil Nadu orders removal of caste-based names from public places

The Tamil Nadu Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Commission has issued instructions to all district Collectors to identify and remove caste names from roads, public places, and civic infrastructure. Imayam, the writer and Chairperson-in-charge of the Commission, initiated the directive through correspondence to district authorities. The instruction specifies that Collectors must complete the removal and renaming process, after which they are required to furnish detailed reports to the Commission documenting the changes undertaken.

The Commission has set a one-month timeline for district officials to submit their compliance reports. This action reflects ongoing efforts in Tamil Nadu to address caste-based discrimination through administrative measures and symbolic changes in public nomenclature.
