Tamil Nadu has issued orders requiring the restoration and upkeep of rainwater harvesting infrastructure across the state in preparation for the northeast monsoon season. The initiative aims to maximize water collection and storage capacity ahead of increased rainfall expected in the coming months.
Coordination committees established at both state and district levels will supervise the enforcement of repair mandates. The state-level committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary, will oversee overall implementation strategy and policy compliance. At the district level, District Collectors will head monitoring committees responsible for tracking progress and ensuring local authorities complete required maintenance work.
Rainwater harvesting structures play a crucial role in Tamil Nadu's water management during monsoon seasons, capturing runoff for use during drier periods. By ensuring these systems are in working order, the government aims to enhance water security and reduce dependency on external sources during the monsoon months.
The directive reflects the state's broader strategy to improve water conservation and utilization efficiency. Officials have prioritized the completion of repairs well in advance of the monsoon season to allow adequate time for testing and optimization of all harvesting infrastructure.
