Tamil Nadu recognises 319 villages for achieving TB-free status

Tamil Nadu's health department has formally acknowledged 319 villages in Vellore and surrounding districts for attaining TB-free status, reflecting progress in the state's tuberculosis elimination initiative. The villages have demonstrated sustained control of the disease, meeting specified epidemiological criteria for transmission cessation.

The recognition programme underscores the collaborative efforts of health workers, local administration, and community participation in achieving disease control targets. Villages designated as TB-free have maintained low or zero new case incidence over prescribed monitoring periods, indicating effective implementation of preventive and treatment protocols.

The achievement comes as part of India's broader National TB Elimination Programme, which aims to eradicate tuberculosis across the country by 2025. Tamil Nadu has emerged as a frontrunner in several districts, with intensified surveillance, early diagnosis, and complete treatment adherence forming the cornerstone of these efforts.

Official recognition of TB-free villages serves dual purposes: acknowledging community success and providing benchmarks for other regions to replicate effective strategies. Health authorities have attributed the progress to strengthened diagnostic facilities, improved access to standardised treatment regimens, and enhanced contact tracing mechanisms in rural areas.
