A recovery agent working in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, met a fatal end after attempting to resolve a loan default situation by personally financing an outstanding installment, authorities said. The agent, identified as Prem Kumar, paid the final installment of a loan from his own funds after facing pressure from his employer to recover the dues.
The arrangement took a tragic turn when Prem Kumar subsequently demanded repayment of the money he had advanced on behalf of the borrower. According to preliminary reports, the borrower allegedly resorted to violence, fatally attacking the recovery agent.
Following the incident, the accused allegedly disposed of Prem Kumar's body by burying it, attempting to conceal evidence of the crime. The case has drawn attention to the often-aggressive practices employed by recovery agents and loan collection agencies operating across Tamil Nadu and other states.
Police have registered a case and initiated investigations into the matter. The incident highlights the risks faced by recovery professionals who often operate under intense pressure from lending institutions to meet collection targets, sometimes resorting to irregular practices to close outstanding accounts.
