Tamil Nadu's educated youth face paradox of joblessness despite qualifications

A comprehensive survey of Tamil Nadu's youth demographics presents a complex employment landscape, where educational attainment has not translated into universal job security for the state's younger population. The findings indicate that more than 50 per cent of young people in Tamil Nadu possess tertiary qualifications and work in salaried positions, suggesting a substantial skilled workforce.

However, the same data underscores a troubling contradiction: graduates account for approximately two-thirds of the state's unemployed population. This disparity points to a potential mismatch between educational qualifications and available employment opportunities, or suggests that credential holders are competing fiercely for limited positions in their respective fields.

The survey further reveals significant gender-based employment gaps within Tamil Nadu's youth cohort. Forty per cent of young women report being outside the workforce, education, or training sectors entirely—a substantially higher figure than their male counterparts. In contrast, only 10 per cent of young men find themselves in a similar situation of economic inactivity.

These statistics raise concerns about the state's capacity to absorb its educated population into productive employment and highlight the particular vulnerability of young women in accessing economic opportunities. Policy analysts suggest the findings warrant targeted interventions in skill development and job creation initiatives across Tamil Nadu.
