Tamil Nadu's plans for a second airport serving Chennai have entered a new phase following the closure of the Parandur project. State authorities are now actively assessing alternative sites that could accommodate the region's growing aviation needs and relieve pressure on the existing Chennai International Airport.
Two locations have emerged as leading candidates for the proposed facility. Cheyyur in Chengalpattu district and Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district are currently under consideration as viable options. Both sites are being evaluated based on technical feasibility, land availability, connectivity to the city, and environmental considerations.
The establishment of a second airport involves multiple procedural steps, including environmental assessments, land acquisition processes, and regulatory clearances from aviation authorities.
