Tamil Nadu seeks to restrict Pallikaranai wetland buffer zone to smaller area
The State Wetlands Authority has proposed limiting the interim zone of influence around the Pallikaranai marshland to 36 survey numbers, a significantly smaller footprint than previously designated. The Madras High Court is expected to rule on the proposal this month.

The State Wetlands Authority has moved to substantially reduce the interim zone of influence around Pallikaranai marshland, proposing that it be restricted to just 36 survey numbers covering approximately 128.19 hectares. The proposal marks a significant shift in the regulatory boundary around one of Chennai's most ecologically sensitive wetlands.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan of the Madras High Court heard arguments on the matter and indicated that orders would be passed on October 14, 2026, regarding the restriction of the interim zone of influence to the proposed area. The decision comes after consideration of the authority's formal submission detailing the rationale for the reduced buffer zone.
The Pallikaranai marshland, located in south Chennai, has long been subject to competing pressures from urban development and conservation efforts. The zone of influence designation determines the extent of regulatory oversight and restrictions on activities surrounding the wetland's immediate perimeter.
The High Court's decision is expected to clarify the legal and administrative framework governing future development and land-use decisions in the area. Environmental groups and residents have closely monitored the proceedings, given the marshland's importance as a breeding ground for migratory birds and its role in the city's natural drainage system.
