Tamil Nadu shelves Parandur airport project, opts for Chennai expansion

Tamil Nadu has shelved its ambitious Parandur airport project, marking a significant shift in the state's aviation infrastructure strategy. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the decision to abandon the greenfield airport development, citing a preference for consolidating expansion efforts at the existing Chennai International Airport.

The state government has identified alternative locations for future aviation requirements, though detailed specifications remain under review. The decision reflects a strategic pivot towards maximizing the potential of Chennai's established airport infrastructure rather than investing in a new facility.

As part of the revised plan, Terminal 5 will be constructed at Chennai Airport, enhancing the facility's capacity to handle growing passenger traffic. This expansion aligns with efforts to strengthen the state's primary aviation hub without diverting resources to a separate greenfield project.
