Tamil Nadu significantly raises human-wildlife conflict compensation payouts

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a significant enhancement in compensation amounts for victims of human-wildlife conflict, marking a substantial increase in relief provisions for affected residents across the state.

Under the revised compensation framework, individuals who suffer major injuries or partial disability ranging from 20% to 60% incapacitation will now receive enhanced payouts. Medical certification from the District Medical Officer or an officially constituted medical board is required to substantiate claims. The maximum compensation for this category has been increased to ₹5 lakh, representing a dramatic rise from the previous ceiling of ₹59,100.

The enhancement reflects the state government's commitment to providing greater financial relief to those impacted by encounters with wildlife. The decision addresses longstanding concerns from residents in areas where human-wildlife interaction remains a persistent challenge, affecting livelihoods and community safety.

The revised compensation structure applies across various categories of human-wildlife conflict incidents. Eligible beneficiaries can now access significantly improved financial support through the established claims process, subject to proper medical documentation and official verification of disability levels.

The government's move comes as wildlife conservation efforts continue throughout Tamil Nadu, with the enhanced compensation scheme intended to balance both environmental protection and human welfare concerns in affected communities.
