Tamil Nadu temples introduce mobile phone deposit facility for worshippers

The HR&CE Department has rolled out a new mobile phone deposit facility at Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tirupati and Sri Lakshminarasimhar Temple, allowing worshippers to securely store their devices before entering the sanctum sanctorum. The move seeks to preserve the spiritual atmosphere within temple premises while accommodating modern-day realities.

Under the scheme, devotees can deposit their mobile phones at designated counters operated by temple authorities at no charge. Temple staff will maintain records of deposited items to ensure safekeeping and smooth retrieval following worship sessions.

Certain categories of devotees have been granted exemptions permitting them to carry switched-off mobile phones into the temples after verification by temple authorities. These exemptions apply to persons with disabilities, expectant mothers, and senior citizens, recognizing their specific needs and circumstances.

The exemption policy acknowledges that some worshippers may require immediate access to communication devices for medical or emergency purposes. Temple management will conduct verification procedures to validate eligibility and ensure compliance with the requirement to keep devices powered off during the time spent within temple premises.

The initiative reflects growing efforts by religious institutions across South India to balance traditional worship practices with contemporary necessities, ensuring both spiritual sanctity and the welfare of all devotee categories.
