Tamil Nadu to boost SC/ST hostel student allowances, expand facilities

Tamil Nadu's Social Justice Ministry has committed to enhancing support for disadvantaged student communities through a dual-pronged approach targeting both immediate welfare and long-term infrastructure development. The initiative aims to address the persistent challenges faced by SC and ST students pursuing higher education by improving their access to quality accommodation and nutrition.

Minister Vanni Arasu revealed that the government would increase the monthly food allowance provided to students residing in social justice hostels, a move designed to ease financial pressures and improve living standards. The enhanced allowance is expected to enable students to access more nutritious meals and reduce dependency on inadequate stipends that have long constrained their academic pursuits.

Complementing the immediate relief measures, the state government has earmarked resources for the construction of 150 new social justice hostels across Tamil Nadu. This expansion programme seeks to address the chronic shortage of hostel beds and provide safe, dignified accommodation to a significantly larger cohort of SC and ST students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The announcements reflect the government's broader commitment to educational equity and social inclusion. By combining enhanced welfare provisions with infrastructure investment, officials contend that the state aims to create an enabling environment for marginalised students to pursue higher education without financial hardship.
