Tamil Nadu to build supercritical thermal power plant in Thoothukudi

Tamil Nadu's government has greenlit construction of a supercritical thermal power generation facility in Thoothukudi, marking a significant addition to the state's capacity to meet rising electricity demand. The announcement comes as part of a broader push to modernize and strengthen the state's power infrastructure.
Alongside the thermal power plant, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin unveiled the Tamil Nadu Transmission Improvement Scheme, a comprehensive initiative budgeted at ₹33,066 crore. The scheme is designed to upgrade and expand transmission networks across the state, ensuring efficient distribution of power to major consumption centres and reducing losses in the system.
The dual announcement reflects the state government's commitment to addressing power sector challenges amid industrial growth and urbanization in Tamil Nadu. By combining generation capacity expansion with transmission infrastructure upgrades, authorities aim to create a more resilient and efficient electricity supply chain.
The supercritical thermal power station is expected to incorporate advanced pollution control technologies, addressing environmental concerns associated with conventional coal-fired plants.
