Tamil Nadu to construct 27 check dams for flood water conservation

The Water Resources Department of Tamil Nadu has outlined an ambitious plan to construct 27 check dams throughout the state as part of its flood management and water conservation strategy. These structures will be strategically positioned to intercept monsoon runoff and seasonal water flows, allowing for gradual infiltration into groundwater reserves.

Check dams are low-cost hydraulic structures designed to slow water flow and increase infiltration, making them effective tools for water harvesting in semi-arid and arid regions. The proposed construction addresses the dual challenge of managing excess water during monsoon seasons while building reserves during dry periods.

The state has long grappled with the dual crisis of floods during heavy rainfall and water scarcity in lean months.
