Tamil Nadu to establish safe houses for couples at risk of honour killings

The Tamil Nadu government announced plans to establish safe houses in districts across the state to provide shelter and protection for couples and individuals at risk of honour-related violence. Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu made the announcement in the state Assembly, signalling the government's commitment to addressing a persistent social issue in the region.

The initiative follows the Supreme Court's judgment in the Shakti Vahini versus Union of India case, which established legal protections for individuals facing threats related to inter-caste or inter-community relationships. The ruling has formed the basis for several states to strengthen institutional safeguards against honour-based violence.

The decision came after representations from survivors of honour killings and civil society activists who have long advocated for dedicated support infrastructure. These groups highlighted the need for immediate, accessible shelter options for at-risk individuals and couples seeking to escape potential violence from family members or community members opposed to their relationships.

The safe houses are expected to provide not only temporary accommodation but also counselling, legal assistance, and rehabilitation services. Officials indicated the facilities would operate in coordination with law enforcement and social welfare departments to ensure comprehensive support for vulnerable persons.
