Tamil Nadu to launch digital driving licences, vehicle certificates

Tamil Nadu is set to join states leveraging digital infrastructure for transport documentation, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin confirming the launch of digital driving licences and vehicle registration certificates effective September 15, 2026.

The digital certificates will be downloadable across Tamil Nadu from the specified date, modernising the document delivery system for residents. The move aims to reduce bureaucratic processes and improve accessibility for vehicle owners and licence holders across the state.

Accompanying the digital rollout, Tamil Nadu will introduce 'Anywhere Registration/Licensing' services in a phased manner. This decentralised approach will allow citizens to register vehicles and obtain or renew licences at multiple locations rather than centralised offices, reducing travel and processing time.

The initiative aligns with India's broader digital governance push, where state transport departments have progressively adopted electronic documentation systems. Tamil Nadu's phased implementation suggests the infrastructure and training required for the new system will be deployed gradually across the state to ensure smooth operations.
