Tamil Nadu to phase out physical driving licences, shift to digital format

Tamil Nadu's transport department will halt the issuance of physical driving licences and registration certificates following September 12, marking a significant shift towards digital documentation. The state government has announced that all future issuances will be conducted entirely through a digitised platform, aligning with broader efforts to modernise administrative processes across the region.

Under the new system, applicants will be able to download their digital driving licences and registration certificates at no cost. This complimentary access period will remain valid for one year from September 13, or until amendments to the relevant motor vehicle laws are formally implemented, whichever occurs first. The government order specified that the free download facility will ensure accessibility during the transition phase.

The digitisation initiative is expected to reduce paperwork, streamline the licensing process, and minimise environmental impact by eliminating the production of physical documents. Officials indicated that the digital versions will carry the same legal validity as their physical counterparts, enabling users to access their credentials through a secure online portal.

The state's move aligns with India's broader digital governance agenda and reflects an increasing trend among regional administrations to transition essential services online. However, the government has built in a grace period to address any technical or legal challenges that may arise during the implementation phase.
