The Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department is set to launch a comprehensive temple restoration initiative targeting 150 heritage structures that have fallen into disrepair. The project will be split into two phases based on the extent of deterioration at each site.
Fully dilapidated temples numbering 75 will be restored at an estimated cost of ₹50 crore, while a further 75 partly damaged temples will require ₹35 crore for renovation work. The restoration effort aims to arrest further decay of these historically and culturally significant structures across the state.
Beyond structural rehabilitation, the department has indicated that the revival initiative will extend to celebrating and preserving the folk religious traditions associated with these temples. This includes renewed focus on the worship practices and local deities that have sustained these spiritual centers for generations.
The announcement underscores the state government's commitment to protecting Tamil Nadu's extensive temple heritage, which remains a cornerstone of the region's cultural and religious landscape. Officials have positioned the renovation programme as essential to ensuring these temples continue to serve their communities for generations to come.
