The Tamil Nadu government has rolled out a three-year Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) policy designed to accelerate adoption of energy storage technologies across the state. The programme sets an ambitious target of deploying 2.5 GW with a storage capacity of 10 GWh by the end of the policy period.
Under the framework, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TNPDC) will procure BESS capacity totalling 2,500 MW and 10,000 MWh from eligible projects. This procurement approach is intended to attract private investment and encourage participation from energy storage developers and technology providers.
The policy comes at a critical juncture as India accelerates its transition toward renewable energy sources. Battery storage systems play a vital role in managing the intermittency of solar and wind power, enabling grid operators to maintain stable electricity supply and prevent outages during peak demand periods.
Tamil Nadu, already a leading renewable energy producer in the country, has been expanding its solar and wind capacity significantly. The new BESS policy is expected to complement these investments by providing efficient energy storage solutions that enhance grid reliability and reduce dependence on conventional power generation.
The initiative aligns with broader national objectives to develop domestic energy storage capabilities and reduce electricity costs through technology deployment and economies of scale.
