Tamil Nadu upgrades half its police stations with extended CCTV storage

The Director General of Police for Tamil Nadu has disclosed significant progress in modernising the state's police infrastructure, with approximately half of all police stations now equipped with enhanced digital video storage capabilities.
During a hearing before Justice V. Lakshminarayanan at the Madras High Court, the DGP reported that 1,071 police stations have been upgraded to retain closed-circuit television footage for an 18-month period. This extended retention capacity represents a substantial improvement in the force's ability to preserve evidence and investigate cases.
The remaining 1,029 police stations are scheduled to receive similar upgrades as part of an ongoing modernisation programme. The police leadership indicated that efforts are actively underway to enhance storage infrastructure across these facilities, though a specific timeline for completion was not disclosed.
The initiative reflects broader efforts across Indian police forces to strengthen digital surveillance capabilities and improve evidence preservation standards. Extended CCTV retention periods are considered crucial for investigating serious crimes and supporting prosecutions in cases where investigation timelines may extend beyond immediate periods.
