The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) and the Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA) have announced plans for a coordinated public campaign against the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), marking a show of unity among key Tamil parliamentary representatives.
The two parties reached their agreement following talks held early this week at the residence of Suresh Premachandran, leader of the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF). The meeting underscored shared concerns among Tamil political leadership regarding the PTA's provisions and application.
The joint protest initiative represents an effort by the Tamil blocs to mobilize public opposition to legislation they view as problematic. The coordinated action reflects broader political consensus among Tamil parties on the issue, despite occasional divisions on other matters.
The Prevention of Terrorism Act remains a contentious legislative measure, with critics arguing it grants excessive powers to security forces and lacks adequate safeguards for civil liberties. The joint protest by ITAK and DTNA is expected to amplify calls for amendments or repeal of the controversial law.
