KORONADAL CITY — Local authorities in Tampakan have mobilized resources to prepare for the expected arrival of Super El Niño, a climate event anticipated to bring heightened environmental stress to the region. Mayor Leonard T. Escobillo formalized the response effort through Executive Order No. 37, series of 2026, establishing a municipal task force dedicated to coordinating preparedness and mitigation strategies.
The task force has been mandated to develop comprehensive contingency plans addressing multiple impacts associated with the climate phenomenon. Primary concerns include prolonged drought conditions that could affect water availability across municipal water systems and agricultural communities reliant on rainfall for crop production.
Agricultural productivity represents a critical vulnerability for the municipality, with El Niño conditions historically triggering significant crop damage and yield reductions. The task force is expected to coordinate with regional agricultural agencies and community organizations to identify vulnerable farming areas and implement protective measures where feasible.
The formation of the response mechanism reflects growing regional awareness of climate-related threats facing South Cotabato. Municipal officials have indicated that the task force will work to ensure adequate water reserves, establish early warning systems, and coordinate disaster response capabilities in preparation for the anticipated weather patterns.
