Tanzania opposition leader Lissu ends hunger strike over legal access

Lissu, a vocal critic of the Tanzanian government and leader of the Chadema opposition party, initiated the protest action after authorities refused to permit him meetings with his lawyers while in custody. The hunger strike, which lasted several days, was called off following negotiations over his legal representation.

The 56-year-old politician is being held on treason charges, a conviction for which could carry the death penalty under Tanzanian law. His detention has raised alarm among human rights organizations and international observers who have questioned the transparency of proceedings and conditions of his incarceration.

Access to legal counsel is considered a fundamental right under international law and Tanzania's own constitution. Lissu's legal team has maintained that restrictions on their ability to represent him compromise his right to a fair trial.
