Tata Steel deploys AI surveillance to shift focus to accident prevention

Tata Steel is leveraging advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, computer vision and remote operations systems to fundamentally reshape how it approaches workplace safety across its facilities. The initiative marks a significant shift in industrial safety strategy, moving beyond traditional post-incident investigations to proactive, real-time hazard identification and prevention.

The steelmaker has installed more than 10,000 CCTV cameras equipped with AI-enabled surveillance capabilities to detect unsafe acts and generate immediate alerts across its operations. According to Rajiv Mangal, Vice President of Safety, Health and Sustainability at Tata Steel, the technology enables the company to prevent accidents before they happen rather than conduct investigations after incidents occur.

"Most organisations use CCTV cameras for post-mortem analysis following an incident. Tata Steel is committed to doing this proactively -- to prevent accidents from happening in the first place," Mangal said. The company's integrated approach combines AI-powered surveillance with connected workforce systems and remote monitoring capabilities to enhance safety outcomes across all operations.

The investment in technology-driven safety measures has yielded measurable results. Over the past 15 years, Tata Steel has achieved a 38 per cent reduction in its lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) across the group, demonstrating the effectiveness of its comprehensive safety initiatives. The company's latest technology deployment is expected to accelerate improvements in workplace safety metrics and create safer working environments for its workforce.
