Tata Steel launches fire-resistant structural steel for building safety
Tata Steel has developed a BIS-certified structural steel variant that maintains exceptional strength during high-temperature fires, potentially reducing building collapse risks. The new E350 grade can retain two-thirds of its yield strength at 600°C for extended periods.

Tata Steel has unveiled a fire-resistant structural steel designed to enhance the safety and resilience of buildings during fire incidents. The newly developed E350 structural steel has received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and demonstrates superior performance characteristics under extreme heat conditions.
The material's key advantage lies in its thermal stability. When exposed to temperatures of 600°C, the steel retains approximately two-thirds of its room-temperature yield strength for up to three hours. This extended load-bearing capacity during fire scenarios could prove critical in preventing structural collapse and allowing occupants more time for evacuation.
The development addresses a significant gap in India's construction safety landscape. Conventional structural steels lose strength rapidly at elevated temperatures, potentially compromising building integrity during fires. By maintaining higher strength levels for longer periods, the E350 variant provides architects and engineers with enhanced design flexibility and improved fire safety margins.
The BIS certification confirms that the steel meets rigorous Indian standards for structural applications. Industry experts suggest the innovation could find applications across residential complexes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities where fire safety regulations demand enhanced structural performance. The development aligns with India's growing emphasis on building safety codes and disaster resilience in construction practices.
