Tata Steel seeks UK government talks on Port Talbot EAF delays
Tata Steel's chief executive has indicated the company wants to engage with the UK government to address implementation challenges affecting its electric arc furnace project at Port Talbot. The steelmaker has stressed it bears no responsibility for construction delays on the £1.25 billion facility.

Tata Steel is seeking dialogue with the British government to resolve obstacles impacting the timely rollout of its electric arc furnace (EAF) project at Port Talbot, Chief Executive T V Narendran said on Tuesday. Speaking at the All India Management Association's 53rd National Management Convention, Narendran stressed that delays do not stem from Tata Steel's end.
"We are in conversation with the UK government to say let's have a discussion on what can be done," he told media. The 3.2 million tonne facility, being developed at an investment of £1.25 billion, is primarily held up by delays in securing power supply access.
In August, Narendran had signalled that Tata Steel UK expects to secure electricity access for the project by 2029. The company signed a connection offer with the Electricity System Operator in May 2024. Power availability has emerged as a critical constraint for the steelmaker's flagship modernisation initiative in the United Kingdom.
