Salaried employees, business owners, and self-employed professionals must file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) by end of business on August 31 to comply with statutory requirements for the current assessment year. The deadline applies to all eligible taxpayers whose income exceeds the basic exemption limit or who are required to furnish returns under tax laws.
Missing the deadline carries significant repercussions. The Income Tax Department imposes penalties under Section 271F, with fines ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000 depending on the quantum of income and filing delay. Beyond financial penalties, late filers may face challenges in claiming tax refunds and could invite unwanted scrutiny from tax authorities. Additionally, delayed filing can complicate loan applications and affect other financial transactions requiring proof of tax compliance.
Taxpayers filing ITR-3 (for business and professional income) or ITR-4 (for presumptive income schemes) should exercise particular caution. Common mistakes include misclassification of income categories, improper claiming of deductions, incomplete disclosure of assets or liabilities, and mathematical errors in calculations. The tax department has flagged instances where taxpayers claim inconsistent depreciation rates or misreport capital gains, leading to subsequent assessments and penalties.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has streamlined the online filing process through the income tax portal to facilitate last-minute submissions. However, technical glitches during peak hours near the deadline are not uncommon. Experts recommend completing filings at least 24-48 hours before the cut-off to avoid submission failures and ensure proper acknowledgment from tax authorities.
Taxpayers still uncertain about their filing obligations or return type should consult qualified Chartered Accountants or tax professionals immediately to avoid costly errors and missed deadlines.
