Tea Research Institute alerts to El Niño threat to Sri Lankan tea crop

The Tea Research Institute (TRI) has issued a cautionary statement regarding the vulnerability of tea cultivation to climatic stress, contingent upon rainfall levels anticipated between January and March 2027. The warning was delivered during the 35th National Monsoon Forum – 2026, a platform convened by the Department of Meteorology to assess seasonal weather forecasting and agricultural implications.

According to the TRI's assessment, the critical three-month window during the early part of 2027 presents significant risk if precipitation falls below adequate levels. The institute cited ongoing El Niño effects as a contributing factor to potential weather irregularities that could impact tea growing regions across the country.

The monsoon forum, which brings together meteorological experts and agricultural stakeholders, serves as an important mechanism for communicating seasonal forecasts and their implications for key economic sectors. The TRI's participation underscores the interconnection between weather patterns and tea production, one of Sri Lanka's major export commodities.

Tea cultivation in Sri Lanka remains highly dependent on seasonal rainfall distribution, particularly during monsoon periods. The industry has historically faced production pressures during drought conditions, making accurate weather forecasting essential for planning and crop management strategies.
