Teacher unions call for review of senior educator allowance criteria

Teacher unions have formally requested that the Ministry of Education (KPM) and the Public Services Department (JPA) review the qualification criteria for a RM120 senior teacher allowance, arguing that job responsibilities should take precedence over school classification in determining eligibility.

The unions contend that current criteria linking the allowance to school grades disadvantage senior educators working in lower-graded institutions despite shouldering equivalent administrative and supervisory duties. The push reflects growing concerns about equity in compensation structures across Malaysia's education system.

Approximately 2,504 senior teachers are reportedly affected by the current allowance framework. The unions have additionally requested that authorities consider implementing a transitional period to mitigate the impact on affected educators while the eligibility criteria undergo review.

The issue represents a broader debate within Malaysia's teaching profession about how performance-based compensation should be structured. Officials have not yet publicly responded to the unions' formal request for a reassessment of the allowance scheme.
