Tech Giants Face Antitrust Lawsuit Over Alleged AI Development Slowdown Pact

Four leading artificial intelligence companies face antitrust allegations for allegedly agreeing to decelerate their AI advancement efforts, a lawsuit filed Friday in US District Court for Northern California asserts. The complaint names Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind and SpaceXAI as defendants, contending they violated federal antitrust laws through coordinated action to slow technological progress.

According to the lawsuit, the alleged coordination crystallised on September 12 when Anthropic's Chief Executive Dario Amodei published an essay advocating for industry-wide cooperation on decelerating AI advancement in favour of stronger safety protocols. The same day, OpenAI's Sam Altman, SpaceXAI's Elon Musk and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis each publicly endorsed Amodei's proposal, the complaint states.

The lawsuit argues that an agreement among rival AI companies to maintain development speeds below competitive market levels constitutes anticompetitive conduct that harms consumers. The plaintiffs contend that such coordination reduces the value users obtain from paid AI subscription services by artificially restricting the pace of product innovation and capability enhancement.

The complaint represents an escalation in regulatory scrutiny of the rapidly expanding AI sector, where competition among major technology firms has intensified as generative AI applications gain mainstream adoption.
