Teen developer programs surgical robot to autonomously remove tumours
An 18-year-old American student has created an autonomous control system for the da Vinci surgical robot capable of removing tumours without human intervention. The system successfully completed three of four test procedures on gel models.

The student researcher developed a sophisticated framework that enables surgical robots to perform tumour excision independently, representing a significant advance in medical automation technology. The system was trained using simulation-based methods before being deployed on the da Vinci robotic surgery platform, one of the most widely used surgical robots in clinical settings worldwide.
Testing on synthetic gel models designed to mimic human tissue showed the autonomous system achieved a 75 per cent success rate in tumour removal operations. The three successful procedures demonstrated the system's ability to identify target tissue and execute precise surgical manoeuvres without operator guidance, a critical capability for future autonomous surgical applications.
While current surgical robots like the da Vinci require constant human control, autonomous systems could potentially expand access to surgical care in regions facing surgeon shortages. The research underscores growing momentum in applying artificial intelligence and robotics to complex medical procedures, though significant regulatory and safety validation would be required before any clinical deployment.
The development highlights the increasing role of young engineers in advancing surgical technology.
