Telangana is grappling with widespread drought conditions across 315 of its 621 mandals, prompting state authorities to escalate appeals for central government assistance. The arid conditions have posed significant challenges to agricultural output across large swathes of the state, threatening farmers' livelihoods and food security.
In response to the crisis, the state government has announced the implementation of 'khet bachao abhiyan' (crop-saving campaign) scheduled to commence on October 22 and run through October 30. The initiative will be executed in partnership with national agricultural institutions and universities, leveraging technical expertise and best practices to help farmers protect remaining crops and plan for recovery.
The coordinated campaign represents a multi-pronged approach combining advisory services, resource management guidance, and alternative farming techniques to minimise agricultural losses during the drought period. State officials have indicated that the programme will focus on vulnerable farming communities across the drought-affected mandals.
The appeal to the Centre underscores the severity of the drought situation and the need for disaster relief support. State authorities are seeking financial assistance and other relief measures to help affected farmers and support agricultural recovery efforts in the coming months.
