Telangana is moving to establish a 14-month foodgrain buffer to shield its population of more than 3 crore from potential supply disruptions caused by El Niño conditions. The state currently holds 28.03 lakh tonnes of rice in reserves, providing coverage for approximately 11.7 months, according to state officials.
Beyond rice, the government is considering expanding its Public Distribution System (PDS) offerings to include wheat flour and other essential commodities, according to Food Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy. The enhanced stockpiling strategy reflects growing apprehension about the El Niño phenomenon's potential to disrupt monsoon patterns and agricultural output across the region.
The initiative underscores Telangana's proactive approach to food security in a state where agriculture remains a critical economic sector. By pre-emptively building reserves ahead of anticipated weather challenges, state authorities aim to prevent supply shocks and ensure stable food availability for vulnerable populations dependent on the public distribution network.
El Niño, characterized by warming ocean temperatures in the Pacific, historically correlates with reduced monsoon rainfall across South Asia, raising concerns among agricultural-dependent states. Telangana's preparatory measures align with broader regional efforts to mitigate climate-related food supply risks.
