The Telangana government is moving forward with plans to restore the Kaleshwaram barrage, a critical irrigation infrastructure project, with restoration works slated to begin next month. The Chief Minister has issued directives to expedite the process, with state officials tasked to secure all necessary final approvals before the end of the current month.
The Kaleshwaram barrage, which forms part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, is one of the largest irrigation projects in the state. The restoration initiative aims to address structural and operational challenges while ensuring the barrage continues to serve its primary function of irrigating vast agricultural areas across the region.
According to preliminary estimates, the repair and restoration work is projected to cost approximately ₹4,193 crore. The scale of the project underscores the state government's commitment to maintaining critical water infrastructure that supports agricultural productivity and livelihoods across Telangana.
Official sources indicated that the December commencement timeline is contingent on securing all regulatory and administrative clearances by the end of this month. Once approvals are finalized, the project is expected to proceed in phases, with technical teams already preparing detailed execution plans to minimize disruption to irrigation operations during the restoration period.
