Telangana expands postgraduate medical seats by 359 for 2026-27 academic year

Telangana has sanctioned 359 additional postgraduate medical seats across its government colleges, marking a significant expansion of advanced medical education capacity in the state for the 2026-27 academic year. The new seats will bring the total postgraduate intake to 1,625 across government medical institutions.

The expansion will enable 23 of the state's 35 government medical colleges to offer postgraduate programmes, a substantial increase from the 10 institutions that previously provided such courses. This development aims to address the growing demand for specialised medical training and produce more qualified doctors in advanced medical disciplines.

The move is expected to strengthen Telangana's healthcare infrastructure by increasing the availability of specialist medical professionals trained within the state. The addition of postgraduate seats aligns with the broader objective of enhancing medical education accessibility and reducing the gap between the number of qualified specialists required and those currently available.

The enhanced postgraduate capacity will also provide more opportunities for medical graduates to pursue advanced degrees without having to seek training outside the state, potentially contributing to the retention of medical talent within Telangana's healthcare system.
