Telangana faces deepening groundwater crisis amid severe rainfall shortfall
Telangana's groundwater levels have declined further over the past month as the state grapples with a significant rainfall deficit. Vikarabad district and areas on Hyderabad's periphery are reporting the lowest water levels, with over two-thirds of districts experiencing deficient precipitation.

Telangana has recorded 628 millimetres of rainfall against the normal average of 831 millimetres, creating mounting concerns over groundwater sustainability across the state. The 24 per cent shortfall has left most districts struggling with inadequate water availability heading into the critical dry season.
Data shows a stark geographical divide in precipitation patterns. While 11 districts managed to record near-normal rainfall, ranging between -19 and -3 per cent of expected levels, 22 districts faced severe deficits ranging from -20 to -50 per cent. The disparity underscores uneven distribution of monsoon activity across Telangana during the reporting period.
Vikarabad district and peripheral areas surrounding Hyderabad have emerged as the most severely affected regions, recording the lowest groundwater levels in the state. The situation in these localities has deteriorated further during the month under review, compounding existing water stress in the region.
The combination of depleting groundwater reserves and insufficient rainfall poses significant challenges for agriculture and drinking water supply across Telangana. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the state heads into months when natural replenishment of aquifers typically slows further.
