Telangana faces severe August rainfall deficit amid El Niño conditions

Telangana's monsoon performance deteriorated significantly in August 2026, with the state recording a cumulative rainfall deficit of 38 per cent against normal precipitation levels. The shortfall reflects the continued influence of El Niño conditions, which have disrupted monsoon patterns across South and Southeast Asia.

The rainfall deficit proved most acute across the state's major metropolitan areas. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) zone, Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC), and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) all experienced sharper precipitation shortfalls compared to the state average, underlining the concentrated impact on urban population centres.

The deficient rainfall carries implications for agricultural output and water resource management in the state. Telangana's agrarian economy remains heavily dependent on monsoon precipitation, particularly during the southwest monsoon season which typically spans June through September. Sustained deficits across multiple months could affect crop yields and strain irrigation reserves heading into the latter part of the agricultural year.
