Telangana launches open schooling initiative for prison inmates

Telangana prisons have introduced an open schooling programme designed to provide educational opportunities to inmates across correctional facilities in the state. The scheme was launched by Yogita Rana, Principal Secretary to the Department of Education, alongside Soumya Mishra, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, and other senior government officials.

The open schooling model allows inmates to pursue formal education while incarcerated, addressing a significant gap in rehabilitation and skill development within the prison system. By enabling prisoners to earn recognized educational qualifications, the programme aims to improve their prospects for reintegration into society upon release.

The initiative reflects growing recognition among Indian correctional authorities of education's role in rehabilitation. Open schooling programmes offer flexibility in curriculum delivery and examination schedules, making them particularly suited to the constraints of institutional settings where inmate movements and schedules are restricted.

State prison authorities have indicated the programme will be rolled out across Telangana's correctional facilities. The scheme aligns with broader efforts to modernize prison management and move beyond purely custodial approaches toward comprehensive rehabilitation frameworks that address the social and educational needs of the incarcerated population.
